Advice regarding explorer.exe
« on: 8 January 2004, 03:57 »
Hi,

So anyways, I'd like some ideas on how to prevent explorer.exe from starting with Windows NT 5 without having an additional process start up and stop the explorer.exe process. Thx.

-Mikey.

This is the Microsoft Eradication Society. This is not a Windows Help and Support forum. If you need help doing something with Windows, next time go to a forum like www.annoyances.org or www.winguides.com . Here we discuss what is wrong with Microsoft Corporation, and alternatives to their software.

However since I'm nice I will reply to your question. By Windows NT 5 I suppose you mean Windows 2000. Explorer.exe is the Windows shell, not just a file manager. This means that if you disable it from starting up, you will not have a desktop, a taskbar, or a start menu. There will just be an empty screen unless you tell Windows to use a different shell. If that is what you want to do, then run the file gpedit.msc and use the System Shell policy to specify what shell you want to use. Other than that I do not think there is a way to disable Explorer from starting up. You might want to try to see what happens if you just delete the file, though.

You get an error message saying to reinstall windows.

changing the shell policy is the best thing to do.

try running the NT 4 shell. it's way better

Install:

And explorer.exe won't be starting up. You'll get something MUCH better instead.

well i hera od this *great* software that enables you to anything you like with your files, without using any explorer.exe...

seriously though, you know at the top of this very forum it says:

This section is made for people who run a Microsoft operating system and dislike it, or for people who refuse to run a Microsoft operating system, but have something to say about it.

If you're seeking help with a Microsoft operating system because you have a problem with it, then this is NOT the right forum to post. Please consider another forum in that situation.

It's very important to check the
Microsoft, Windows & Palladium FAQ before asking questions.
