Look what this "sophisticated win user" has to say...
I think that a great number of these people online are still relatively young. 30 something and younger. What I'm concerned about is that marketing is pushing technology onto non-tech types....ex: gradma, and grandpa can just buy a pc so they can e-mail a video, photos, whatever....yeah.. cause it's so simple.

Can you imagine? I mean, you don't have to imagine it, it's happening. People who may have never used a computer before are buying into the hype, they buy a computer because they just want to "stay connected" and aol/m$ makes it seem like you just plug it in, like a tv, and it works!

Maybe we do need Apple, Apple is closer to this than anything that m$ puts out. Perhaps, in the future this will be the answer. Advanced pc users will use Linux, and the casual appliance user will use an Imac, plausible?
*meow!* I didn't say Linux was easier, I said it was better, Dumbass!

to be honest i believe that most people buy a computer because of all of the fallowing

a)chat on line.
b)Do whatever work they have in office apps.
c)listen to music
d)because the neighbor has a PC.
e)the thought of free porn is inticing.
I dare anyone in here who haved repaired other people's computers to prove me wrong.
The majority of people buy a computer for all the above.

There is not a thurst of knowledge. We have taped in the bigest information resource humanity has ever seen and what we do with it? We fill 75+% of it with porn sites.

If you were an allien, what would you think about the human race by observing it by far away?

Personaly if i was an allien i would ask my self this: "Its gonna be very  hard for me to find a reason not to nuke the shit out of them".
Yeah

For the people who think linux will make it into being widespread as workstations, your wrong. People who use workstations in work applications only want to do their job, they dont want to know how to fix anything or make a script that check if some 12 year old backdoored their computer, they just want to do their work and get on with it. Personally i think linux in the state it is in should only be used on servers. Until it is more user friendly thats where its staying in the real world.

WTF?!

I switched just so I could do what I needed to do! I got fucking fed up with IE locking up, the printer spooler getting corrupted, office crashing, and the whole box freezing because, how dare I?, I wanted to shut down!!!!

So you want to walk about work, huh? I'll you what people want...They want to read e-mail from all of their contacts without having outlook spread dozens of viruses on their workstations (even with the damn virus software installed).

What do you know about workstations? Real workstations have green text, and a black back ground so you sit your ass down and fucking do your work. Your concern is probably downloading WMP files, so of course you require a top O' the line Wintel machine with a user-friendly GUI so you can drag and drop your MP3s into your bloated   EZ-cdCreator.

And then, you bring up the stupid issue of security holes! How many fucking times do we have to spell this out for you?

As soon as a hole is found, it is fixed! No system is 100% perfect! The Linux community takes care of itself.

As if you haven't heard of the countless security bugs in ALL windows releases! What's more important is that those are only the bugs that had to be acknowledged by M$ because they were so embarrassing! M$ is hiding even more security holes! So just shut up!

The fact that linux bugs are publicized should indicate to you that something positive is going on. Microsoft doesn't admit anything voluntarily!

Since you don't think it can be a desktop OS, it just means you didn't try hard enough! You must realize that you didn't have a choice when it came to learning an operating system. All you've ever seen in your life is windows, and you learned it by default! You don't realize that you spent years being around windows computers before you started using them. It just seemed natural to you. You didn't just sit down one day, and learned windows cold. It was on tv, in the stores, in your school, and maybe in your parents office. You spent years learning windows, and you didn't even know it. So don't be pissy because you can't figure out Linux in a few hours!

Hey, try SuSe, it's dumbed down enough for anybody to get started in Linux, and KDE can be configured to look better than any xp gui. Plus, if you want to get serious, it has all the server software you need (since that's all it's good for) sarcasm

'nuff said.

and of course the average home computer user wants to learn programming languages so they can deal with compile errors when they're trying to load the text browser. oh and a newbie tries to remove a directory called "bin" from his home dir so he types rm -r /bin and his whole system is fucked. isn't that fantastic for the work environment?
