you'll find that this is already the case in XP, there is a clause in the EULA for XP where the user signs the right over to microsoft to install anything without prior concent on the user's computer. read it and weep.

You are right, auto updates are default in XP. They are also default in 2k.

Refalm:
Auto updates are default yes, but in Longhorn it will be different.

Windows XP first downloads an update and then asks you if it's OK to install it. Longhorn doesn't ask that anymore, it just installs.
