You missed my point on this one. Her surfing runs about half as fast if I have Mandrake running at all (even if I am not on the net). If I am on the net also then we of course share the bandwidth and she surfs runs slower than I do.

If however I am running Windows then we surf at about the same speed.

Hey,

OK this is f*cking weird.

After doing some testing I found this.

The above mentioned problems exist if I am using KDE, WindowMaker or Sawfish very bad.

Using Gnome the click problem improves some but not completely.

Using ICEWM, Enlightment or BlackBox the problems don't exist.
I would say that it is some incompatibility with my system and those windowsmanagers.
Obviously I will not be using KDE any longer.

Any ideas as to why this might be the case?

Calum:
haven't a clue, but it reminds me of my sticky mouse problem.

I have a touchpad, and sometimes it sticks on one place in the screen like rubber. I can move it, but when i let go the pad, it springs back where it came from.
Also when i click something while it's acting up. like a menu, the menu appears only to instantly disappear, so i have to logout (or shutdown), using the keyboard, and login again to get it working.

The odd think about this is that it happened in windows ME and also in windows 98... but it also happens in kfm, Sawfish, and Enlightenment sometimes!

So it's a hardware problem, if it happens so much across the board? no! because if it were, it would persist when i restart, but a restart usually fixes it, if not, another restart hot on the heels of the first one always does.

I can't help you with the problem btw but just thought i'd share my own weird stuff experiences so you know yr not alone!  ;)

Hey Calum,

That one you mentioned would bug the shit out of me too.
Anyway nice to know I am not the only finding bugs.

Hey,

I finally figured it out. I was playing around with different setups and removed the KDE window manager. Instantly my system is running like a dream. All the above problems are gone. Further Galeon no longer has problems with .org websites. I am using the Gnome and Galeon right now and it is screaming. Once loaded Gnome is actually faster than W98. Of course boot up and log in are still not to quick.

Something in the KDE was slowing down everything. Maybe it was that stupid KDE version of GDM I don't know.

Oh BTW the KDE games still work great.

So if anyone else is having any of these problems  under Mandrake 8.1 I highly recommend removing the KDE.
