Your modem is a real, external, serial modem. That is the _best_ you can get for Linux! If you have only one serial port (the "funny port that looks like |0|0|"), your modem will be accessed by /dev/ttyS0
AOL has a beta product out for linux to allow you connect. You can try it out.
There is also an opensource beta program you can try called "Peng for AOL".
