RH 8.0 - RHN applet disappearing from taskbar

Yeah, but it has cool things in it like MPlayer, Xine, Kino (if you have the kino repository added), etc, etc...

Another tip is to throw this into root's crontab:

This will not automatically upgrade your system but it will keep your apt-get lists up to date so you never have to do an "update". I prefer not to "automatically" upgrade my system but you can if you wish.

Ok, you're right, but I'm kinda glad the icon flashes when there's a system update.
You can always choose not to update if you want.

Take yesterday, it did an update of xinetd for me, I would never have thought of that otherwise.

That's true, you could always use both. When your ICON flashes you could update RedHat and that will be your reminder to start Synaptic and look for other upgrades. The packages that have upgrades available have an indicator next to them. But you don't even have to worry about looking through them because you can just click the "Upgrade" button and if there is something to upgrade the "Proceed" button will light up to finish it off. Then you can keep everything updated, even the non-RH stuff.

Damn right, I'll just switch to Debian if that happens.    If you use RedHat in your business you might want to pay for support. If you use it at home you might want to pay for support. You can buy it, you can pay for rhn... or not. That's what the whole game is about. As soon as I can't do that with RedHat I will use something else. It's only one of the many reasons RedHat is better than Microsoft. You can do this and not be made to feel like a criminal. I'm doing my part by pushing RedHat and helping people find easier ways to use it, it's up to the individual if they want to pay for the support. They shouldn't be harassed into it. That's a Microsoft tactic. And again if that happens I will switch to Debian.

Being on the stock market is one of the very few things I dislike about RedHat. Being on the stock market means they have to appease stock holders. That's not what Linux is about. Now I am much more OK with it now than the day they IPO'd when I was in complete shock. I almost switched distros that day. Debian is very good, it's usually not quite as bleeding edge but things just work in Debian.
