If all you want to do is edit text you don't need *NIX. Throw a copy of FREEDOS on there with a simple text editor. In fact get VIM or emacs to run on it:

Well there is an editor there called notepad but I don't know if it is like the windows notepad. VIM and emacs are 10,000 times more powerful when it comes to text editing than notepad. But they are a little harder to learn. Well worth the effort though.

i must recommend basiclinux.

http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/baslinux

it is perfect for your computer. You will be able to edit text files using pico and w3, and any other editors you choose to put on there as well. You will also be able to do other things too, which is always a bonus i think. Plus it supports long filenames and is case sensitive, unlike freeDOS, plus the bash shell is nicer to use and is friendlier than the COMMAND.COM shell.

I recommend putting freedos on there and then following the instructions for making a hard drive installation of basiclinux.
