Display dead but OS up after resuming from ACPI S3 on Linux
pritamkd:
My problem is that on my Intel 855GM/PM chipset laptop, with SUSE9.1 Kernel 2.6.4-52 , the Video does not resume after S3 resume. I have tried a lot of forums and this seems to be a common problem. I am using an ATI graphics card.
The OS is up, because i can ping the system on a network, but the display is lifeless.
Any solutions/suggestions?
Vicky

Welcome to our forum
In order to help you, we need to know when the screen goes blank. Is it before, or after you start up X?

I think she means after the display has gone into standby or sleep mode it dosn't wake up again.
I have had this problem to under Windows, on both my old PC and laptop.
The PC had an ATI card, I found that turning the monitor off and on again and hitting a few keys worked for me. I know it wasn't a problem with the monitor as I still use the same monitor with my new PC.
But as for the laptop I'm sorry I can't help you, the screen went blank and nothing would turn it back on. I knew it hadn't crashed as when I plugged it into my monitor it worked. I can't remember what graphics card the laptop used, When I get home I will check.
I have a sneaky suspicion they both used similar ATI cards.

Do ATI cards work well under Linux?

Quick and simple:
No. (Well, maybe with the generic ATI driver, but not the accelerated one.)

I'm sure ATi cards will work okay, but don't expect to play UT 2004 with it. There drivers aren't ready for that kind of stuff.
