I agree, it will work, my 3D Savage pro was retardedly slow under Linux but it worked.

It's an ACPI problem.
There exist an utility called PostVGA to solve this.
I don't know if it works for ATI.

The default ATI driver provided by X.Org/XFree86 isn't as bad as the official ATI driver - but, it isn't accelerated.
