Dont you think that when it comes to functionality Gnome is superior?

yes, i use a wm that fits how i am feeling like using the system, my custom compiled gnome2 install, well, i just like to play with things like that, and its also VERY FAST. then agian, windowsmaker is great too

From one noob to another. I strongly advise you to install the latest KDE version. The version before that, had a memory leak that shows its head at times.
Having said that, from my personal experience since I used I also used KDE2.0 and 3.0, I can safely say that the speed trade off between KDE and Gnome is not that much. Its too small for it to be a bother.
And again as i said I am a noob, so maybe there is something that I overlooked. But if I was in your shoes I would install KDE. Why limit your self to one GUI when you can have more? Then you can decide.
I like Gnome better because its more easy for me to edit files. Its just a personal thing.
KDE has big flexebility as well. That Quick browser option in KDE lets you navigate and find anything you want fast. Plus KDE is more pleasing on the eyes than Gnome is, hands down.

I've used many a desktops over the years and I have to say that KDE 3.x is currently my favorite. It certainly isn't the fastest or lightest weight but if you have the system for it it's worth it. I don't have much time with Gnome 2.x but my past experiences with Gnome have not been good. Too buggy for me, and it no faster or lighter feeling than KDE in my opinion.
Now for a second choice if you are looking for light weight and speed is Windowmaker. Now this window manager is quite different than KDE or Gnome, and a little more of a traditional UNIX feel (right click menus, middle clicks etc). If you come from the Windows world you will probably find it a little more cumbersome but it's a work horse and doesn't get in your way if you know what you are doing.
I also liked Enlightenment a fair amount as a Linux Window manager. But it can be a little buggy like Gnome. It is a pretty Window manager and has some cool features.
I won't really mention any of the many others because they are either outdated or have fallen by the way (many would disagree with me). And Window manager debates can be like vim vs emacs debates or political debates so I just suggest you try the above and maybe some others and make your own choice based on your needs.
In RedHat all of the above should be on your login screen list if you installed them (except for possibly Enlightenment). Don't know about Mandrake.
