Dell: We have the best deals on our computers!
Apple: We have the fastest computer!

BBB: Apple, you're not allowed to say that...
Fair?

Come on, why does everyone pick on Apple...

Agreed.  Besides, isn't the advertised machine a dual 2Ghz (4Ghz total) G5?  That's definately faster than the rest of them (especially considering the PPC architecture).

It doesn't work like that. Putting in another processor doesn't double the speed of the system.

It does if the software running on the computer is writen to take advantage of the two CPU's.

The G5 is the first 64-bit chip to be backwards compatible, but not the first 64-bit chip in general.  The Athlon64 came out like just after the G5 came out.

No it doesn't. 2 CPUs are obviously faster than one, but even under optimal conditions it won't be twice as fast.

SMP with the G5 still suffers from 10 or 15% overhead.

Plus you need apps that *use* the second processor (Photoshop etc).

Only on the classic OS. Mac OS X supports SMP at the kernel level, so all processes are able to take advantage of it.

Some apps are simply written with special SMP functions that speed them up even more.

The thing is, truth-in-advertising laws are a tricky thing. The laws are written under the premise that most comparable products are of about the same quality, so any company is allowed to call its product "the best". But, if a company wants to say it's product is better than another company's product, that statement must be the truth to be legal. So Apple is fine saying "Fastest Personal Computer", but not okay saying "Faster than the AMD64".

It pays to know your laws.
Windows: 32 bit extensions and a graphical shell for a 16 bit patch to an 8 bit operating system originally coded for a 4 bit microprocessor written by a 2 bit company that can't stand 1 bit of competition.
