Mac OS X Server, the industrial-strength server operating system

Xserve runs Mac OS X Server, the cutting-edge, UNIX-based server operating system that gives you such coveted features as protected memory, preemptive multitasking, symmetric multiprocessing, advanced memory management, and the latest in networking technologies. At the core of Mac OS X Server is the industrial-strength open source foundation called Darwin. Based on the Mach 3.0 microkernel and BSD UNIX, Darwin is the rock-solid foundation that gives Mac OS X Server its remarkable performance and stability.

Belive it or not there are actually a whole bunch of MacOSX powerd servers out there. Severeal universities and other institutions out there use them. So this is certainly a much desired upgrade.

None the less, it is also an alternative to the NT server boxes. For people who choose NT over UNIX for a server, because they want a user friendly interface, now they have a better choice. Run it on MacOS X, it's based in FreeBSD, has no cliant licence, and is more user friendly than any version of windows.

So thar ya go.

Besides, every good computer maker should offer a server alternative. Who knows, maybe it will catch on  :D

When I saw this, I fell to the ground and began having seizures of joy.

I think they went a bit overboard in terms of power, though.. oh well, maybe SGI will start building personal computers and the world will switch upside down.

Unlimited liscences..........

Windows 2000 Server: $1200 US (With 10 Client Access Licenses)

Windows 2000 Advanced Server: $4000 US (With 25 Client Access Licenses)

Apple Xserve: $3000.00 (Unlimited-Client License)

Apple Xserve, the power of UNIX with the ease of OS X, unlimited licenses.

Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server... the power of buring cash and the ease of a lighter wallet.

Thanks, but I already knew the XServe was cheaper and faster than Pentium-class servers.

It's very expensive and you are required to use Mac hardware.. what's there to like?  There are many, many better server solutions other than this expensive rubbish.

I also like little boys and can't take figure out enough to take a runner when nobody likes me here.

why yes there are....  but Windows isn't it.

But a server running on Mac hardware will probably perform better.  If you got an old Imac G3 for around $700 and put Linux or NetBSD on it, you'd have an excellent server.

btw- it is over all cheaper than certain windows based solutions.  This one can be used as a remote access server with unlimited users.  With windows based servers it costs more money for more users.
