NeXTSTEP

Anyone got a NeXT computer they want to sell.  I have never owned one, so documentation and manuals would be nice.  Also I have never used the OS before, that means like 10 reformats before I get it just right so the discs or copies of them would be required.  Just wondering, I doubt anyone does.

I seriously doubt that any member of the MES forums, actually owns a NeXTSTEP computer. I'd also love to get my hands on one of those babies. Actually, Tim Berners Lee, wrote the first ever web browser on a NeXTSTEP cube model, which must make it one of the most wanted machines out there. Keep us informed if you find one.   ;)

Weren't NEXT boxes, just regular x86 PC's, in a nice case?

Maybe all you need is a copy of NEXTStep and a PC with compatible hardware.

That was Openstep that ran on x86. Nextstep ran on '040 hardware like the earlier 68k Macs.

Head on over to blackholeinc.com to pick up a NextStep box along with software. Beware: It's expensive

I wouldn't say *nobody* has a NeXT machine.  I do.

$300 isn't that bad for a rare computer...it's way better than the thousands of dollars that the Twentieth Anniversary Mac goes for...

Damn lucky webmaster

its quite obvoiusly why this NeXT question was in the apple section, OSX is based off of NeXTSTEP
x86: a hack on a hack of a hackway
alpha, hewlett packed it A-way
ppc: the fruity way
mips: the graphical way
sparc: the sunny way

I think it was only the cubes that were $300, because the stations/slabs are a fair price. Really, it's the same machine, just in a more LC-like case.

OOOOh, so lucky, is it a cube or one of the other systems.  Is it fast, or does NeXTSTEP run slow on them like X does on my 733 G4?  I was kind of worried.  X runs slow on a 733, how fast could a 25mhz comp be? can quartz really slow it down that much?

Do you know any good information site on next systems?

I checked out black hole,  I think i'm gonna get a hard drive and cd's from them and try to get the box off of ebay, I saw one that wasn't too expensive that I may go for.

I have a Turbo Color slab, not a Cube.  Wanted a Cube, but they're ridiculously overpriced on eBay.  OPENSTEP is kind of slow on it, but it's not like I use the machine every day.

The last released version of OmniWeb for this machine -- 3.1 or so -- takes literally three minutes or so just to start.  Browsing the web is downright painful.

I could probably boost the RAM or something and get better performance.

But . . . it's great to have just for the l33t points one carries just for owning one of these machines.

Dood...WTF? OS X is slow on your 733 G4? How much RAM? Something's not right.

OS X 10.2.5 is silky smooth on my 700 Mhz G3 (Radeon Mobility 7500 QE capable).

well I wouldn't say its unbearable, but my 1.7 Athlon is way faster in Windows and Linux, although, those aren't really comparable systems.  I got 640 RAM.  Its way faster than my 600 iBook but I wish it was faster.  Takes like 20 seconds just to open Photoshop, and takes a couple bounces to open any browser.  The worst program is iPhoto.  Damn that thing is slow.  I also run it at 1600x1200 which is really hard, big windows minimize sort of choppy.  At 1280x1024 everything is smooth, but still same operating speed.  I like the realestate.  Hell, my dock doesn't even fit on a 1280x1024 screen without being made smaller.

So really, the NeXT systems are dead slow.  I actually wanted to ask what the difference between openstep and nextstep are.  At blackhole inc they give you the choice on everything between openstep and nextstep. do you happen to know the difference?
