Actually for the most part countries *do* have IP ranges. Check out http://www.arin.net for a list of ranges and what countries they belong to.

its funny how I never have any troubles on IRC with kiddies and there war bots. Oh wait thats because I use GNU/Linux and it is more secure than M$hit.

Canada rules.
If it weren't for Canada, we'd never have gotten SCTV, and the American spinoff... Saturday Night Live.
We'd never have had William Shatner as Captain Kirk, or Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock.
We'd never have seen and heard the hotter-than-should-be-allowed Avril Lavigne.
We'd not have a place for expatriated Americans to go where they don't have to learn a new language (only learn to speak it well!).
Canada rocks.

The major networks are more continent orented but those are all subnetted up and certain subnets belong to certain countries/companies. For instance class C networks only contain 254 addresses. All of the addresses in a class C range have to be close to the router that they are behind. I'm not 100% sure but I don't think if you live in Canada that you can get an IP address from an American cable company and vice versa and I would think it would be similar in other close countries. Of course you could dial up via modem on a long distance call to a remote country and get an IP address from that country. But most people don't want to dial long distance.
