YourLinux.co.uk Blows Llamas.

I was just at the forums at yourlinux.co.uk and you know what, they are a company who supposedly sells cheap linux CDs via mail order, and they appear to be pocketting the money and not bothering to send the CDs! I just wanted to spread the word not to use them. A good alternative to yourlinux.co.uk is LinuxEmporium.co.uk who are reliable, inexpensive and fast, from my experience.

Also, over on that forum have a LOT of people asking questions, and nobody (more or less) answering the questions. I thought maybe it would be good if i could get the posters to come to the new www.newtolinux.org.uk forums instead, since they seem really good, or to these forums in some cases. SO...

I thought i would make people here aware anyway. Maybe some of you could ocassionally stick a head in at yourlinux.co.uk and answer people's questions by telling them to come here (or go to newtolinux.org.uk) instead.

I think it is okay to do this because
1) yourlinux.co.uk are ripping people off, which makes me angry and
2) yourlinux.co.uk do not appear to even read their own forums, so they will not care if you try to poach their posters.
3) the posters deserve some help and encouragement i think!

Just my thoughts...

Here's a new one I just ran across:

http://www.linuxiso.net/

Do you know if there are any issues with this site? I see they have all the latest stuff there. RedHat 8 install CDs (3) for $9.

The only reason I went to this site was because there appears to be a DNS issue with http://www.linuxiso.org/ at the moment so I tried a couple other domain names. Then of course there is http://www.linuxiso.com/ which appears to be a German site. I don't know anything about either site.

I do have that setup and ready.

When my website goes live (soon, very soon) I will burn anything contained on the site, and that includes Linux CDs.

I dunno about shipping internationally though. It is quite expensive.

I don't get how they can ship worldwide for $3.50.

And if it's too good to be true, it usually is.

http://www.akgames.net:8000/Shop.htm

Are my prices reasonable?
EDIT: I know, there are only 2 things there. I need to know if there is a market first...

that's good, but you're going to need to do five or six different distros and some packages too.
like doing an openoffice CD with versions of openoffice on it compiled for several different systems, and of course the source code, that sort of thing, or having a 'linux from scratch' CD, where you provide all the bits needed for a linux from scratch setup.

having a high port like that is so that Apache does not have to be run as root, it's a security thing.

for port 80 to be opened, Apache must be run by root.

Only the initial Apache process must be executed with root privelages. The children that Apache spawns are usually executed under user "apache" or "nobody". Those children are the processes that outside connections actually access.

So if apache were to be exploited the exploit will be executed under the "apache" userID which *should* be configured with minimal privelages. Usually nothing should be writable by that ID except for quarantined working directories.
