what are some of the other major operating systems other then Linux(/UNIX/BSD), MacOS, and Windows(/dos) ?

Desktop: Athlon 2600/ 768mb DDR266
--Running: Ubuntu 5.10, FC4, Win2k
 (Also, Unbuntu 6-06:5, 5.04; Fedora Core 5, WinXP, but none of these are used much)

Well, there aren't really other *major* OSes, that is other than the ones you just mentioned. If you asked that question about two years ago, I would also mention BeOS, but it's dead now.

If your just reffering to Desktop OS platforms that about covers it if your reffering also to Network Operating Systems then don't forget to Include Novell   Netware which is alive and kicking ass!

It went out of buissness. Their source was given over to the public domain and is called OpenBEOS or something. Currently, it has alot to work to go before becoming a practical choice for an operating system.

Non, monseiur! The BeOS source was given to Palm (the company that bought them), and the OpenBeOS project is to develop a BeOS clone able to run all BeOS software, based on the NewOS kernel (a kernel developed by a former Be developer).

At least that's what I'm hearing... Heh.

Well outside *nix based systems (BSD/Linux/OS X), Mac OS, and DOS/Win32 there isn't really anyting else, besides NetWare, which sole purpose is networking.

As far as PDA and other micro devices to go.  PalmOS is most popular, but Linux is always a good choice.

as for major OSs, let me just point out that *BSD and linux are NOT the same. and at a push, GNU and linux are not the same either. also, i can say too that there are probably linux systems that are more different from each other than linux is to, say, BSD, so the question is misleading. while linux, bsd et al are related, they do add up to at least three or four totally distinct operating systems, all major, all for desktops.

also, there's the likes of SunOS, Solaris, TOPS10, AIX, HP-UX, UNIX, and i think there are five major BSD versions. none of those have any linux in them, and apart from each of them probably having some GNU tools installed on them (but not bundled probably) they are all unique from each other.

Also, does OS/2 still count as a major OS? i might mention FreeDOS too, which is a much better PC operating system than any other DOS i have ever seen.

i've never really heard much about OS/2. i did a little research about IBM when i did my report on the corruption of microsoft, but all i know is that IBM tried to make an operating system to compete with Microsoft's, but microsoft help a little with it?

anyway, what was OS/2 like? did it have any gui, or was it strickly cli?
