No way! A virus? That shouldn't happen! Do you think it's too late to get your money back? Is your operating system still under warranty?

shit! ok, you have to follow these instructions very carefully:

add to your sutoexec.bat this line:
Code: [Select]
then at the very bottom of your autoexec.bat add the line:
Code: [Select]
make sure you follow this exactly

most likely you have to re-install 98 on top of you current install (unless you want to track down every missing exe).  good luck in doing so; i think the 98 cd's format the hard drive by default, but you'd end up with the same result the above post would give you anyway.... you did make backups, right?

Beltorak0 is right. Win98 will format the HDD if it finds any other OS (Including 98). The only M$OS that can install on top and not erase everything is 2K, and that has repair abilities.

So give up, format, and use Linux  ;)

(You could even recover your stuff if you jump to Linux. Get Mandrake, resize your Win98 partition and move your stuff over)

My Rule#1 for any Windows problems...

Be prepared to do a reinstall at any time. It only takes 'bout an hour. And that is less time spent than trying to fix Windows.

After all... you did back up your shit right?

The fix for the real problem takes even less time...

Linux install 15 minutes on a healthy system.

Even my sons's Win98 f00ked up and all he does is play Lego Racer, and Virtual Playstation. Maybe I should buy him a console so I can snag his system too!  :D
*meow!* I didn't say Linux was easier, I said it was better, Dumbass!

You could track down every missing .exe file, but a reinstall would be much easier. Win98 installer refuses to run from DOS mode if it finds a Windows installation. If you run the Windows 98 installer in Windows, however, it will automatically detect your Win98 directory and reinstall the files, keeping your original settings, color shemes, installed apps, etc. If you do this, Win98 should function normally.
