Thought this might interest the more technically minded, although it is from tech tv and it is not as technical as it might be.

'It's entirely possible to install almost every version of Linux on one machine. New versions of LILO eliminate the 1,024th cylinder boundary, enabling you to use up to 160GB for Linux. However, I decided to stop at around 10 versions because any more seemed redundant.'

The most I ever set up in a multi-boot were:
Linux
OS/2 Warp 3
DOS 6.22
Windows 3.11
Win95
WinNT
Win2K

But I find VMware to be *much* more useful than multi-boot. In VMware I can run the above plus Solaris x86, BSD, other distros of Linux, etc, etc, *and* you can run several of them at the same time. Doing things in virtual hardware and partitions is much easier, more useful, and saves time. And I never have to get out of Linux and reboot. Who the hell would need a 57 boot system???

No shit. Why would you need 57 different Linux distros on your machine? If you have 1 distro you pretty much have them all since they all use the same Linux kernel(meaning you can use apps for Linux in any distro and you can do about the same stuff in any distro).

The only thing I can figure is so he can say he had 57 operating systems installed. I suppose he might be a tester/reviewer which might also be a good reason.  I like VMware though because I can have several up at the same time, and can test/develop internetworking between different OSs just as if they were installed on separate computers on my network. Multi booting sucks.

VMware is great but its cost is really prohibiting

I couldnt get vmware to do anything in windows. It wouldnt do the network proeprly and it wouldnt run anything that needed directX. I only had the free trial so i couldnt really play around with it to get it to work.

Well, if you have enough money to buy enough hard drive to install 57 full distros of Linux, you probably have enough money for a copy of VMware.

You probably didn't get the installation configured properly (bridged networking is the key). And it will do *some* directx stuff but it's not for Windows gaming for sure. A good GeForce card (and the nVidia drivers) is a big help with the VMware installation in Linux. I don't use VMware for games though.

I do things like install Win2K Advanced server with a copy of Exchange Server and SQL server for testing between Linux and it. It works *perfectly* for that type of stuff. If you want to play DX windows games then you'll want a copy of Windows on a separate partition and dual boot. I have an R/C flight simulator that I have a copy of Win98 on it's own partition for. And that's the *only* thing I ever reboot for. It's actually been a couple of months since I even used that simulator though.

meh you can fit 57 distros in 40 GB easily enough. I think i might have about 57 GB in total (in all my computers) I am sure each distro would love to have 1 GB

Yes you can fit a distro in that amount of space, but I said full distros which would probably add up to about 3GB each. 3*57=~150GB. So it would take a couple of drives at a coupla hundred bucks each. For a coupla hundred bucks you can get VMware. I think it's more than worth the price of a hard drive. But that's just me. I have actual reasons for running multiple OSs at the same time. It's also cheaper than buying 2 or 3 more computers and uses less power and I don't have to walk as far, etc, etc, etc.
