For any card you will need to check that there is a V4L(2) driver for it.

I would recommend those using the Brooktree bt848 or 878 (suggestion: Hauppauge) or Phillips SAA7134 (suggestion: Compro) chipsets.
As for frontends tvtime or zapping are cool.

Hmmm I saw mythTV but it's written for linux. I googled a bit more and foudn that it works on FreeBSD - sorta. It looks REALLY cool.

EDIT: zapping is supported on FreeBSD, and it looks great. I'm defenitely going to try that one. Tvtime does not work on FreeBSD at all.
