He probably heard the KERNAL story, and assumed it meant the core of any operating system, not just a Commodore thing, and therefore mistakenly applied it to the Linux kernel.  That's a pretty big mistake for a "published" author, and a pretty big mistake for a computer science student as well.

I went for 8 months without ANY MICROSOFT software (yes, only using Linux) ;), 10 days is nothing at all.

Sympathise with the poor soul. He is completely dependant on a single company. BTW I've been on a non-MS diet for almost a month now.

The Computing Dictionary doesn't say anything but "kernal - kernel", the latter being a link (I suppose to the definition of kernel). The interesting part, the ads:
