And exactly how does that qualify you to speak up against Microsoft?

Many here use Windows, and are pretty transparent about it.

I recall asking this question to Aloone Jonez around when I joined, and he had a quite reasonable response.

I haven't used anything other than ubuntu on this computer in years an years, but I have had windows 2000 installed in a virtual box for the (sole) purpose of playing poker, which could not be done through wine.

It's a MS world - some people 'need' to stand it, but when I don't 'need' to, I happily work away on my preferred operating system - which is ubuntu. Many peoples reason for disliking MS has no relation to their software quality, btw. I dislike Apple (and I don't so much care about MS since years ago), but I think they make great devices (as physical devices) that consumers want, but they're assholes trying to lock up their dumb users, and their markets. Fortunately I hope I will never 'need' to buy an Apple product, but the scenario is different for people wrt MS - many people who hate it, still pay tax - nothing new here.

a poem by my computer, Macintosh Vigilante
Macintosh amends a damned around the requested typewriter. Macintosh urges a scarce design. Macintosh postulates an autobiography. Macintosh tolls the solo variant. Why does a winter audience delay macintosh? The maker tosses macintosh. Beneath female suffers a double scum. How will a rat cube the heavier cricket? Macintosh calls a method. Can macintosh nest opposite the headache? Macintosh ties the wrong fairy. When can macintosh stem the land gang? Female aborts underneath macintosh. Inside macintosh waffles female. Next to macintosh worries a well.

I have XP Pro and 7 Pro running as VM's, but neither is "Genuine" if you get my drift. Both are there if I can't get something done in a legit Snow Leo install on a Macintel.

I'm not sure what to answer here, because I installed Windows 7 on family computers. But my own laptop runs Ubuntu.

The number of questions asked at me is lower on Windows 7 I think. I have Kaspersky Internet Security installed, which does an excellent job at prevention someone with limited computer knowledge from getting their PC filled with malware.

Games is the most major problem. Running games in Wine requires knowledge of how winetricks works, and how to set command-line options. I don't see my dad doing something like that when he wants to play GRID. Also the framerate will be lowered by 20% on avarage when playing with the same graphics settings as running in Windows.

I sorta have 3 computers now.  My Thinkpad runs Fedora 12.  My MacBookPro runs Snow Leopard.  And my Dell Inspiron 6000 runs Windows XP.  The Dell is too out-dated to run 7 or Vista - and the program I want to run on it isn't Vista/7 compatible anyway.  I also have XP as a virtual machine on the Mac, but it runs better on the Dell.

My most recent Fedora install fucked up about a month ago and I've not had the energy to even try to sort it out. I did an update and it has refused to boot ever since, I tried booting with the previous kernel and nothing happened so I gave up. This is a big fail in my opinion, Windows hasn'r done that kind of thing since the days of 9x and Ubuntu didn't either.

Perhaps I shouldn't have upgraded to FC 13 so soon? There again, this shouldn't happen with an OS which is no longer in beta, there's no excuse.

I use Windows but honestly I don't think any of you are in the right space between the poles of stupid and arrogantly intelligent to judge any system. Worker201 is such a dumb fuck he probably his parents were probably twins, he doens't even know how to use Linux or Windows - he just gets forum cunts to do it and they should strike and leave him to suffer or foot the bill. Calum is also pretty thick, but just not quite as thick as a man who lives in an Internet cargo cult of tech support like Worker201.

Declan will never get the rage out of his mind to percieve Windows objectively. Davidnix is an old cunt who might have been using Unix while I was in my nappies. I derive all this information on age and what he did in the late 1980s simply from his name of course. I can't blame him for hating Windows.

I certainly can't judge either very objectively either. Windows isn't a philosophy of reality - its a fucking operating system. Objective quantification of the usefulness of any operating system depends what it is being used for. And for what most people use it for (developers included you supply-sider fuckwits) it is the best system, it is miles ahead of any other system and it so far ahead of the ancient systems you morons love the bugs it has simply baffle you pathetic cunts. You're all some intrigued alien race gazing in the sky where a disaster is happening on the Starship Enterprise. None of you have any youth left or enough pride to respect the great work that is Microsoft Windows.

Lol, looks like Cuntardo wants to be banned.

I'm kind of offended he hasn't insulted me, probably because I'm not important enough.

OMG YR CHALLENGING OUR ASSUMPTIONS & PERCEPTIONS!  And you're naive enough to think that you'll eventually succeed in changing people's minds.  The reality is that you're just a prick, and the internet would be better off without you.

For the same reason that you feel disgusted when you see a copy of Atlas Shrugged - that unnamed and mindless feeling - is the same thing that prevents Worker201 from ever opening HIS mind.

I was a socialist once you faggots, that is what you all forget. Once I agreed with all of you, the only person who can change your minds is you. I am just going to tell you all what you really are now: worthless. (Aloone, not you, you're a cool old electronics wizz kid before everything came on nice black chips and done for me)

Worker201, quit your bullshit truck unloading job and get on welfare. As an Objectivst, this would be less of a sacrafice, to live on a stolen means and to do twice as much programming and actual work worthy of you would be far better than what you are doing now. The welfare state is huge, it takes time, but it is worth it if you want to be anywhere at the moment. Otherwise, you'll be stuck, there is a former member of this forum now that is a slave to higher tax brackets, he would hire you but health insurance regulation would send him bust.

Taxes are too high, become a thief yourself, its not worth destroying yourself over.

Until then, I don't care what you say, you are just an unfortunate man who blames it on everything around him. Only you are to blame, leave this forum and get a life. Your code isn't that bad, its mostly just coding grammar and small shit. You could be someone, and that just pisses me off. Fuck you, rotter by choice. Do something with your life.

I couldn't give a fuck about Linux or FOSS and I can sympathise with your view about people who use Windows but preach Linux being hypocritical. I don't like Microsoft but I don't hate them any more than any other big corporation. I don't think Linux is much good as a desktop (certainly not the flavours I've tried) but it must be a decent server otherwise it wouldn't be so popular.

As far as the quality of MS software, it's highly variable some is good, some is shit but as far as I'm concerned cost effectiveness is more important. Windows may be expensive to buy separately but it's cheap for OEM so buying it with a new machine is not a problem. MS Office and especially MS Works are a waste of money because there's OpenOffice which does everything I need and is free.

Now where I do sympathise with the FOSS crowd is file formats. I don't mind proprietary software and think it's a good thing but I think being able to patent a format is a bad thing as well as formats which are a trade secret. The reason for this is not only due to interoperability issues but also the fact that if you save your work in a propitiatory format, it's no longer completely yours, a part of it is now property by the party who owns the file format. There's also no way of knowing what's saved in the file, there could be all sorts of personal information you provided to the software company when you purchased/registered the software so it's a privacy issue too.

I've just learnt to use a PCB CAD called Eagle. It comes in several versions: a free one which has severe restrictions on board size, layers etc., a standard version which is still crippled but less so and a non-crippled professional version. The restrictions are enforced using a licence file and a key which are somehow encoded into every file you save with it which is a privacy issue and has been known to cause problems for those who use a keygen and crack to pirate it.

I'm doing an experiment, I've downloaded the free version of Eagle and have used a crack to get the professional version. The good thing is, it's not only a keygen and licence file generator but it's also patched the exe files which should mean I won't have any problems with is scrambling files saved with it. The utility has backed up the old files and I've written a batch file to rename the files so I can switch back and fourth between the free and cracked versions and I'm only saving files I don't care about to with the cracked version. Fortunately the files saved with the cracked version open in the free version but I'm told that the problems start when you upgrade to the next version so I'll wait and see.

I also use LTSpice which is also proprietary but the files created by it are plain text and are well documented to it's not a problem. It's also free and is designed to work perfectly under Wine so works under Linux too.
