Red Hat 8 is sweet
flap:
I don't think effective auto-unmounting of floppies is really possible, as you couldn't have an unmounter that knew when you were about to remove a disk. In Windows there is no 'sync'ing of file system buffers with removable media because it just physically writes to the floppy everytime you perform a write operation. The only way to make Linux more windows-like would be for the system to mount, write to/read from, and then unmount the disk every time you accessed it.
Calum:
i have thought about that before right enough.
there's bound to be a way to get the system to write straight onto the floppy as you change the information, in the same way that windows does, but if there is, i haven't heard of it... would the solution be to write directly to /dev/fd0 ? i don't think so, for a couple of reasons, not the least of which is how to get the save buttons in programs (like openoffice) to comply. actually, now i think about it, i could just make /mnt/floppy into a symlink to /dev/fd0 instead of mounting it there... what's wrong with this?
the only other thing is, i don't suppose this could be made user specific... so that one user could do it the windows way, and one could mount and unmount normally.
Bazoukas:
i dunno guys, i never had problems mounting and unmounting drives in RedHat, even when doing it via GUI.
Doing config tweaks in fstab to have my second drive mounted automaticaly was a bit tricky but nothing too bad.
flap:
There is a 'sync' mounting option you can add to your /etc/fstab floppy entry which will force the system to sync on every write.

Red Hat just seems to run more smoothly than mandrake. Runs a bit faster. and generally has more up to date packages. It also has slightly better multi language support. Its much easier to switch between languages. I also couldn't get plugger to work for the life of me in mandrake, but with red hat it workd fine. Granted that could be my fault. I'm not saying that Red Hat is way better than mandrake, its mostly just a collection of small things.

Odd, when I ran Red Hat, the exact opposite was true. Mandrake is just a lot better than Red Hat. It is faster, and in my experience more stable. This goes to show you that on a case to case scenario, things are different. Ive never had any trouble with plugger, and since I only speak english, the language thing isn't my concern.
Truth be told Im not 100% satisfied with any of the linux distros Ive tried. It seems that they are always missing something or they have small problems. The problems have less to do with the OS, and more to do with the fact that Im very picky. When I didn't know anything about linux, I couldnt get sound working in Red Hat, but it worked in Mandrake. So I guess you could say Im loyal. Ive had only a few small problems with Mandrake, but those were mostly caused by my ignorance.
Us linux people need to stop squabbling amongst themselves over distros, and realize that we are all the same.
