Red Hat 8 is sweet

Red Hat just seems to run more smoothly than mandrake.  Runs a bit faster.  and generally has more up to date packages.  It also has slightly better multi language support.  Its much easier to switch between languages.  I also couldn't get plugger to work for the life of me in mandrake, but with red hat it workd fine.  Granted that could be my fault.  I'm not saying that Red Hat is way better than mandrake, its mostly just a collection of small things.

TOTALLY agreed, i would never say i dont like mandrake, excellent distro, red hat just runs nicer

I actually just went from mandrake to Red Hat. I have found that mount and umount work more reliably in Red Hat, of course I'm still absolute beginner, but Red Hat also has less bloat. Not that I am dissing Mandrake, I still think it's the better distro as a desktop, but I think I prefer RH, but I do dual boot, the g/f uses mandrake and I am going to use RH. Mandrake feels as though it's heading for the GUI arena, whereas I am a GUI hater. It's all preference, that is what we bitch about most, not having the choice of a different O/S.

But lets not bicker and argue about who killed who - this is meant to be a happy occassion.

umount and mount work fine in mandrake. the problem is that mandrake rudely installs and enables 'supermount'. This program cannot handle normal use of the mount and umount commands, and you can safely su to root and 'supermount --disable' (i think, best do 'supermount --help' to check first). This will render your fstab back into a usable format and will enable all mounting to work as expected.

pkd_lives:
well bugger me sideways. Didn't realise that. Thanks.

But that is the point. RH doesn't have this 'friendly' stuff to the same degree, and why it's becoming my preference.

Still like I say there is lots to learn, and I have other distros to try out, once I get the hang of Linux truly, I may decide that Evil Entity Linux is the one and only true distribution for me... then again.

Calum:
on the other hand, my girlfriend still doesn't understand the mount thing, compared to windows which 'just does it'. And myself i think that linux ought to have an easy to use automounter that WORKS. windows does it, so why can't linux?

i still do not know of an automounter that works as well as windows at enabling you to transparently mount and unmount CDs and floppies. it is a major failing in linux in my opinion, and no wonder mandrake try to fill the gap, however whether it makes it better or worse is up to the flip of a coin i think.
